Serra de Aire Caves

The Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is famous for its limestone caves (Grutas de Mira de Aire, Grutas de Santo António, Grutas de Alvados, etc.), dramatic landscapes, and authentic Portuguese countryside. 

Departure from Lisbon (8:30 – 9:00 AM)

  • Drive ~1h15m to the Natural Park region.
  • Scenic countryside views on the way.

Stop 1: Grutas de Mira de Aire

  • The largest caves in Portugal, with 11 km of underground galleries (600m open to the public).
  • Stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes, and colorful lighting.
  • Guided visit (~1 hour).

Optional Stop 2: Grutas de Santo António or Grutas de Alvados

  • Smaller, more intimate cave systems, very photogenic. (~40 minutes each).

Lunch Stop (local restaurant in Porto de Mós or Fatima area)

  • Regional food: goat, bacalhau, cheeses, and vinho verde.

Scenic & Cultural Add-ons

  • Visit Porto de Mós Castle (a striking green-roofed medieval castle).
  • Optional: detour to Fátima Sanctuary (if appealing to your audience).

NOTE: This tour can be extended to a full day tour by adding more stops along that route.
